Our nation’s roadways are the lifeblood of our country.

They bring the farm to the market and the kids to grandma’s house. The US has over 4 million miles of public roadway that move 72% of the nation’s goods.

Yet 43%, or over 1.7 million miles are in poor condition. In fact, the ACEC’s 2021 Infrastructure Report Card rates the nation’s roadway infrastructure a D!

It’s estimated that the backlog of roadway improvements has cost motorists over $1,000 a year in wasted time, fuel, and vehicle repairs.

And while traffic fatalities have decreased over the last decade, there has been a 60% increase in the number of non-motorists killed during the same time. The overall fatality rate for rural areas continues to exceed that of all other roadways.

What’s clear is that even with the challenges to operating, maintaining, and improving road networks, mindful design and new technologies can vastly improve roadway longevity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety.

Our roadway team keeps on top of new technologies, materials, and design approaches as opportunities to ‘raise the grade’ of America’s roadways.
